Americans called frankfurters "dachshund sausages". A dachshund is a dog from Germany 22 a very long body and short legs. As the men walked 23 the rows of people, they yelled, "Get your dachshund sausages! Get your hot dachshund sausages!" People got the sausages on buns, a special bread.
One day in 1906 a newspaper cartoonist named Tad Dorgan went to a baseball game. 24 he saw the men with the dachshund sausages, he got an idea as a cartoon. The next day at the newspaper office he drew a bun with a dachshund inside --not a dachshund sausage, but a dachshund. Dorgan 25 how to spell dachshund. Under the cartoon, he wrote "Get your dachshund sausages!"

Passage 13
In many businesses, computers have largely 21 paperwork because they are fast, flexible , and do not make mistakes. And they are honest. Many banks advertise that their transactions are "untouched by human hands" and therefore safe from human temptation. Obviously, computers have no reason to steal money. But they also have no conscience (良心), and the growing number of computer crimes shows they can be used to steal.
Computer criminals dont use guns. And even if they are caught, it is hard to punish them because there are no 22 and often no evidence. A computer cannot remember who used it; it simply does 23 it is told. The head teller at a New York City Bank used a computer to steal 24 one and a half million dollars in just four years. No one noticed this theft because he moved money from one account to another. Each time a customer questioned the balance (余额) in his account, the teller claimed a computer error, then replaced the 25 money from someone elses account. This man was caught only because he was a gambler. When the police broke up an illegal gambling operation, his name was in the records.

Farmers, as we all know, have been having a hard time of it lately, and have turned to new ways of earning income from their land. This involves not only planting new kinds of crops, but some 21 ways of making money, the most unusual of which has got to be sheep racing. A farmer now holds sheep races on a regular basis, and during the past year over 100, 000 people have 22 to watch the race. "I was passing the farm on my way to the sea for a holiday," one punter(赛马经纪人)told me, "and I thought Id have a look. I didnt believe it was serious , to tell you the truth." According to a regular visitor, betting on sheep is more interesting than betting on horses."At proper horse races everyone has already studied the form of the horse 23 , and there are clear favorites. But nobody has heard anything about these sheep! Most people find it difficult to tell one from another in any case." I stayed to watch the races, and I must admit that I found it quite 24 . In a usual sheep race, half a dozen sheep race down hill over a course of about half a mile. Food is waiting for them at the other end of the track just to give them some encouragement, I ought to add! The sheep run surprisingly fast, 25 they have probably not eaten for a while. Anyway, the crowd around me were obviously enjoying their day out at the races, judging by their happy faces and the sense of excitement.

Passage 25
The desire to use language as a sign of national identity is a very natural one, and as a result, language has played a large part in national movements. People have often felt the need to use their own language to show that they are __21__ from others. This was __22__ when the United States split off from Britain. At that time some patriots even suggested that the American adopt Hebrew or Greek! In the end as everyone knows, the two countries settled the problem by _23__ to use the same language they had used before. For 200 years Britain and the United States have shown the world that political independence and national identity can be completed without losing all the mutual advantages of a __24__ language.
In other words, language is not __25__ the private property of those who use it, just as French is not the private property of French people, nor English of English people.

Passage 27
While I was waiting to enter university, I saw in a newspaper a teaching job wanted at a school about ten miles from where I lived. Being very short of money and wanting to do something useful I applied, fearing as I did so, that without a degree and with no __21__of teaching my chances of getting the job were slight.
However, three days later, a letter arrived, calling me to Croydon for a meeting with the headmaster. It proved to be a difficult journey: a train to Croydon station, a ten-minute bus ride and then a walk of at least a quarter of a mile. As a result I arrived there, feeling toe hot to be nervous. It was clearly the headmaster himself __22__ opened the door. He was short and round.
"The school," he said, "is made up of one class of twenty-four boys between seven and thirteen." I should have to teach all the subjects except art, which he taught himself. I should have to divide the class into two groups and teach them in turn at three different __23__. And I was disappointed at the thought of teaching maths a subject at which I wasnt very good at school. Worse perhaps was the idea of __24__ to teach them on Saturday after-noon because most of my friends would be enjoying themselves at that time.
Before I had time to ask about my salary, he got up to his __25__ . "Now" he said, youd better meet my wife. She is the one who really runs this school.

Passage 28
A person who believes that he is incapable will not make a real effort, because he feels that it would be useless. He wont go at a job with the confidence necessary for success. He is therefore 21 to fail, and the failure will strengthen his belief in his incompetence.
Alfred Adler, a famous doctor, had an experience 22 illustrates this. When he was a small boy, he was poor at arithmetic. His teacher got the idea that he had no ability in arithmetic, and told his parents what she thought that they would not expect too much of him. 23 this way, they too developed the idea, "Isnt it too bad that Alfred cant do arithmetic?" He accepted their mistaken estimate of his ability, felt that it was useless to try, and was very poor at arithmetic, just as they expected.
One day Adler succeeded in solving a problem which 24 of the other students had been able to solve. This gave him confidence. He rejected the idea that he couldnt do arithmetic and was determined to show them that he could. His new 25 confidence stimulated him to go at arithmetic problems with a new spirit. He now worked with interest, determination, and purpose, and he soon became extraordinarily good at arithmetic.
